Dr. Salomi Papadima-Sophocleous

Dr. Salomi Papadima-Sophocleous, assistant professor in the Languages Department of the University of Nicosia, is a graduate of the department of French Studies, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Athens. She has postgraduate diplomas in (a) Didactics French, Greek and (b) English as Foreigner (FL)/Second (L2) Language (La Trobe University, Australia) and (c) in the Use of Information Technology in Language Teaching (University of Melbourne, Australia). She also has a master (a) in French Literature (University of New England, Australia) and a master (b) in the Development of Language Curriculum Development Frameworks and Language Teaching Materials - Greek as L2 (University La Trobe, Australia). Her doctorate is in Applied Linguistics - Development of English Placement Test Online (University Middlesex, United Kingdom). She was awarded the Middlesex University prize 2005 for professional excellence in recognition of her project: development and implementation of an online English placement test. She taught for a number of years at secondary level, and then at university level at La Trobe and RMIT universities, in Australia, and at Intercollege/University Nicosia in Cyprus. She collaborated for a number of years with the Ministry of Education of Victoria in Australia, in the language programmes of The Victorian Certificate of Education -VCE (mainly Greek and French), in teacher training, as well as well as in the accreditation and development of Language Curriculum Standard Frameworks. She developed teaching materials (printed, audio and digital) for the Ministry of Education of Victoria and the Ministry of Education of Greece, as well as for the publishing companies CIS and Heinemann and John Wiley and Sons. At RMIT University in Australia, she offered the first (world wide in its kind) online postgraduate programme of Education, specialising in the teaching Greek as second/foreigner language with the use of New Technologies. At the University of Nicosia, she also developed NEPTON (New English Placement Test Online), the first electronic language testing programme developed in Cyprus. She acted as language consultant /coordinator for the establishment and running of the Language Centre of the Cyprus University of Technology (2007-2009). She has been collaborating with Middlesex University in the NCWBLP DProf programme as adviser / tutor (2005-to date). She is a member of the Language committee for the Educational Reform of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus. She is also a member of Limassol Municipal Historic Archives - Museum and the Study Centre. Her research interests focus on Language Teaching, the Use of New Technologies in Language Teaching, the Development and Evaluation of Language Teaching Materials, Language Testing (printed and electronic), Autonomous Learning, Intercultural Education in Language Teaching and Oral History. She likes swimming, listening to music, watching films, going out with friends and travelling.
